Moss poles and Monstera+Philodendron are a match made in heaven! These beautiful genera of the Aroid family are enthusiastic climbers, and are easily conditioned to live indoors, making them indoor jungle favourites.
What they do require, however, is a loose, chunky soil to allow for their medium-thick roots to delve through and spread. This carefully crafted mix by soil.ninja contains plenty of large elements to break up the moisture retaining humus-like components (coco coir fibre), and boasts all the elements needed to ensure your tropical plant gets exactly what it needs.
Medium moisture retaining, this substrate should dry evenly over a period of 10-15 days, after allowing all excess water to drain out of the pot and planter (these plants are thirsty, but do not like muddy soil). While fairly tolerant to periods of dry soil, you should not allow the roots to shrivel and wilt, as they will become susceptible to root rot the next time you water.
Components:
- Coco coir - for moisture retention
- Perlite - aeration
- Bark - aeration and movement
- Coarse Pumice - aeration, overwatering prevention
- Worm Castings - natural fertiliser
- Zeolite - moisture control, nutrient balance, and more!
- Activated Charcoal - purification, overwatering prevention, moisture control
When paired with a moss pole plant, keep an eye on the soil moisture levels as you keep your pole moist: if overenthusiastic with your pole watering, you may find the soil struggles to dry out due to the runout of water from the moss pole. Ensure your plant is placed in a pot with good drainage holes, preferably with venting slits, and be sure to empty the cache plate to avoid having the soil sit in water.
If you find your soil is remaining moist for too long, cut back on the pole watering by reducing the volume and frequency of watering. You may also further aerate the mix by adding Clay Pebbles or additional perlite to further reduce the moisture retention.
